A galvanized stock tank is the cheapest honest vessel in this hobby, and the trap is built into that sentence. Because the tank is cheap, buyers size up: a 300 gallon oval costs a fraction of a plunge tub, so why not. The answer is that gallons are the input to your chiller bill, and a 300 gallon tank needs 4,500-6,000 BTU/hr to hold temperature, which is a chiller costing several times the tank. Buy the small tank.

The verdict

That size needs 1,050-2,000 BTU/hr at the 15-20 BTU per gallon floor, which the 1/4 HP class covers at 2,200-2,300 published BTU for $516-620. Step up to a 150 gallon tank and you need 2,250-3,000 BTU, which pushes you into the 1/2 HP class at around $1,950. The tank costs the same either way. The cooling does not.

The sizes actually sold, and what each one costs to cool

Stock tanks come in published capacities, which is convenient because capacity is the only input the sizing arithmetic needs. Multiply gallons by 15-20 BTU per gallon, the floor derived in the sizing guide, and the picture resolves:

The published chiller capacities to read that against: the 1/4 HP class delivers 2,200-2,300 BTU/hr at $516-620, and the 1/2 HP class delivers 4,100-5,750 at around $1,950 for a Penguin. So the jump from a 100 gallon tank to a 150 gallon tank costs you perhaps $50 in tank and roughly $1,300 in chiller. That is the entire economics of this build in one sentence, and it is why the cheap big tank is the expensive mistake.

On stock tank prices: shop locally, and expect scatter

We are not printing a single price for these, because there is not one. The same Behlen 100 gallon galvanized tank appeared at $72.43 and at $328.99 in different listings for the same model number, and a Rubbermaid 150 gallon showed $110.99, $189.99 and $254.12 across three retailers. These are bulky steel and plastic items where freight dominates, so marketplace listings with shipping baked in diverge wildly from what a farm-supply store charges you to carry one to your truck.

The practical rule: buy a stock tank in person. Anything you pay over roughly $250 for a 100-150 gallon tank means you are paying to ship steel, which defeats the only reason to choose a stock tank in the first place.

Galvanized or poly

Galvanized steel is zinc-coated, rigid, cheap and looks the part. Two honest caveats. Steel conducts heat readily, so a bare galvanized tank is the least thermally forgiving vessel you can pick, which makes the insulation section below mandatory rather than optional. And zinc dissolves faster as water turns acidic, so keeping pH in the 7.2-7.6 band that the water care guide specifies matters more here than in a plastic tub. You should be holding that range anyway; in a galvanized tank there is a second reason to.

Structural foam and poly tanks (the Rubbermaid line) trade the look for a wall that does not conduct as aggressively and cannot corrode. Both work. Neither is insulated in any meaningful sense as sold.

Insulation is the build

A stock tank arrives as a single uninsulated wall, so whatever you wrap it in is the entire thermal envelope. Rigid foam board is the standard answer, and the published R-values for 2 inch sheets are worth knowing because they differ more than the price does:

  • EPS, 2 inch: R-7.7. The cheapest, and the softest. Fine under the tank where nothing abrades it.
  • XPS, 2 inch: R-10. The common choice. Rigid, water-resistant, handles ground contact well.
  • Polyiso, 2 inch: R-13. The highest R per inch of the three, and the one to use where you are space-constrained.

Insulate the bottom first if you insulate nothing else. A tank sitting directly on a concrete slab is in continuous contact with an enormous thermal mass that is very good at taking your cold away, and the floor is the one surface where a sheet of foam is trivially easy to add. Then wrap the walls and build a lid: an open water surface is the largest single heat leak on any plunge, insulated tank or not.

The tank is the smallest line item in its own build. That is the number that should reorganize your thinking: you are not building a cheap plunge because you found a cheap vessel, you are buying a chiller and choosing a vessel that does not add to its workload. Two things a stock tank does better than a chest freezer

If you are weighing the two classic DIY routes, the stock tank wins on the two points that actually generate regret in the chest freezer build. It ships with a factory drain plug, so draining is a plug and a hose rather than a pump-out. And there are no refrigerant lines in the walls, so there is nothing to puncture, no sealed system to destroy, and no warranty to void. The freezer's advantage is that it comes with its own cooling; the tank's advantage is that it is inert and you cannot ruin it.

Skip these

  • Buying the biggest tank because it is barely more money. The governing cost is BTU, not steel. A 300 gallon tank commits you to a 4,500-6,000 BTU/hr chiller before you have plunged once.
  • Setting it on a concrete slab with no floor insulation. The cheapest fix in the entire build, skipped more often than any other.
  • Running it with no lid. The open surface is the biggest heat leak you have, and on an uninsulated tank it is the difference between a chiller that rests and one that never does.
  • Ignoring the loaded weight. Water is 8.34 lb per gallon, so a 100 gallon tank is 834 lb of water before you climb in and a 150 is over 1,250 lb. That is a real constraint on a deck or a raised patio, and it is not recoverable after you fill it.
  • Letting pH drift in a galvanized tank. Acidic water and zinc coating are a poor combination. Test weekly; the strips cost pennies.

The bottom line

A stock tank build is genuinely good, and it is good for a reason most builders get backwards. The tank is not the saving, it is the part that barely matters: buy 70-100 gallons, insulate the floor and walls with rigid foam, build a lid, and put the money into a 1/4 HP chiller at $516-620, a pump, and real water care. Size up to 150 gallons and you have added maybe $50 of steel and about $1,300 of chiller. The cheapest cold plunge is not the one with the cheapest vessel. It is the one with the fewest gallons you are happy to sit in.
