For a standard 90-110 gallon tub with one or two users: 1/2 HP. For 150 gallons and up, a garage that bakes, or back-to-back sessions on a schedule: 1 HP. That's the short answer. The longer answer is what the HP label actually measures, because it isn't cooling, and the published numbers show two chillers wearing the same label can differ by 40%.

The verdict

For 90-150 gallon home tubs: a 1/2 HP class chiller (4,100-5,750 BTU/hr published)

That's 37-64 BTU per gallon on paper: enough margin over the 15-20 floor to absorb the gap between a warm-water label rating and cold delivered performance, pull a first fill down in an afternoon, and hold set point through summer. The 1 HP class earns its price only when the tub, the climate, or the schedule genuinely doubles the heat load.

HP measures the motor, not the cold

Horsepower rates the compressor motor's input, not how much heat leaves your water. The spec that does measure cooling is BTU/hr, and manufacturers publish it. Read the 1/2 HP rows again: 4,100 to 5,750 BTU/hr under the identical label, a 40% spread. The 1 HP class runs 10,000 to 11,500. So never buy the horsepower; buy the published BTU/hr, and treat a listing that prints HP with no BTU number as hiding something.

The label is a ceiling, not a promise

None of those spec tables state the water temperature behind the BTU number. That matters because refrigeration capacity falls as the water approaches plunge temperatures: the colder the water, the less heat there is flowing into the evaporator per minute, and the harder the compressor works for each BTU it moves. Owner threads describing first pulldowns that run longer than the label math predicts are describing exactly this. The practical translation: the published number is what the unit can do in favorable conditions, and the margin between that number and your tub's requirement (15-20 BTU per gallon, arithmetic in the sizing guide) is what carries you at 40°F in July.

The pulldown math, both classes

A 100 gallon tub holds 834 pounds of water, and cooling it from 65°F tap to 45°F removes 16,680 BTU. Dividing by the published ratings:

  • 1/2 HP class (4,100-5,750 BTU/hr): about 2.9-4.1 hours. An afternoon. Overnight with real-world derating.
  • 1 HP class (10,000-11,500 BTU/hr): about 1.5-1.7 hours. Fill it after lunch, plunge before dinner, even with derating.

Once at set point, both classes hold a covered tub easily; the difference shows up in recovery. After a session warms the water, or a lid left off, or a heat wave, the 1 HP claws back in half the time. Whether that halving is worth paying for is the whole decision.

When the 1 HP is the right buy

  • Big water: 150-250 gallons. Stock tanks and two-person shells put you at 2,700-5,000 BTU/hr required by the sizing floor alone. That's 1 HP territory before any margin.
  • Hot ambient. A garage that passes 100°F strips capacity exactly when the water gains heat fastest. The bigger unit's headroom is what survives summer.
  • Back-to-back users on a schedule. Training partners at 6 and 6:30 need recovery in minutes, which is raw BTU/hr.
  • Set points under 40°F. The last few degrees are the most expensive; capacity margin is how you get them without an all-day compressor.

What the 1 HP costs you

  • Sticker price. Typically several hundred dollars over the same maker's 1/2 HP. Real money that buys nothing if your heat load never uses it.
  • Circuit headroom. Published running draw is 7.2-9.6 amps against the 1/2 HP class's 3.9-4.4, before compressor start-up surge. The Active Aqua manual tells you to give the chiller an outlet that supports nothing else, and at 1 HP that stops being optional advice.
  • Noise and footprint. Penguin publishes 59 dBA for its 1 HP: conversation-level, constant while running, next to wherever you keep it.

Skip these

  • Any listing with an HP label and no BTU/hr number. The honest makers publish full tables. Silence is a spec.
  • Aquarium-class units for outdoor installs. The Active Aqua manual approves indoor use only, and its warranty excludes failure to follow instructions. An indoor-only chiller on a patio is running uncovered by its own paperwork.
  • The cheapest 1/4 HP units doing a 1/2 HP job. At a published 6.1 BTU per watt (EcoPlus) against 11-13 for the 1/2 HP class, the bargain unit moves half the heat per kilowatt-hour and runs all day to do it.
  • "1 HP" at a 1/4 HP price from a brand with no manual to check. If the number can't be verified anywhere, you're buying the label, and the label measures the motor.

The bottom line

Buy the published BTU/hr, not the horsepower. The 1/2 HP class (4,100-5,750 BTU/hr) is the correct default for 90-150 gallon home tubs: margin over the sizing floor, afternoon pulldowns, gentle circuit draw. Step up to 1 HP for big water, hot rooms, scheduled back-to-back use, or sub-40°F set points, and know you're paying for recovery speed, not lower bills.
